Emergency Preparedness Checklist

1.  Create an Emergency Plan
  • Meet with your family.  Discuss what could happen in the case of fire, severe weather, earthquake, flood, forest fire or other disaster.
  • Plan a response to each type of disaster.
  • Establish two escape routes from each room.
  • Post emergency telephone numbers.  Make sure all family members know how and when to call.
  • Pick one local and one out-of-state friend or relative to call if you become separated during a disaster.
  • Pick two meeting places -- one close by and one outside your neighborhood.
2.  Prepare a Disaster Supplies Kit
(Items should be checked and updated every six months.)
  • 3 days' supply of water
  • Supply of non-perishable food
  • Change of clothing
  • Rain gear, sturdy shoes
  • Blankets/sleeping bags
  • First aid kit/prescription medications
  • Extra pair of glasses
  • Battery powered radio
  • Flashlight & extra batteries
  • Credit cards/cash
  • Extra set of keys
  • List of family physicians
  • Important family information
3.  Prepare an Emergency Car Kit
  • Battery powered radio
  • Flashlight & extra batteries
  • Blanket
  • Booster cables
  • Fire extinguisher (type ABC)
  • First aid kit & manual
  • Bottled water
  • Non-perishable food (i.e., granola bars)
  • Maps
  • Shovel
  • Tire repair kit & pump
  • Flares
  • Tire chains
